Wimbledon champion and current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner has reappointed his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara as part of preparations for the upcoming Cincinnati Open and US Open.

Ferrara’s return was confirmed on Wednesday, with Sinner’s team stating the move aligns with the player’s ongoing focus on “continuity and high-level performance.”

“Umberto has played an important role in Jannik’s development to date,” the statement read.

Sinner had previously split with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year following a doping controversy involving the banned substance clostebol. Although Sinner tested positive, an independent tribunal cleared him of wrongdoing after it was revealed the contamination was unintentional—resulting from a spray Naldi used that had been provided by Ferrara.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) initially appealed the tribunal’s decision, but a three-month suspension was ultimately agreed upon earlier this year.

After serving the ban, Sinner returned to action in May. He reached the Roland Garros final, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, before defeating the Spaniard at Wimbledon to secure the title.

Reflecting on the split at last year’s US Open, Sinner had said, “Because of these mistakes, I wasn’t feeling confident continuing with them. I needed clean air.”

Ferrara, who has since worked with Matteo Berrettini, had previously pointed to Naldi as the source of the contamination. Now back on Sinner’s team, Ferrara’s reappointment signals a fresh chapter as the Italian star sets his sights on the US hardcourt season.
