WBA and WBO world cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez will be out of action indefinitely following successful shoulder surgery, his promoters, Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Mexican southpaw picked up the injury during his unanimous decision win over former world champion Yuniel Dorticos on June 28 in Anaheim. Golden Boy didn’t specify which shoulder was operated on but confirmed the procedure took place on Saturday.

“After getting three medical opinions and a lot of thinking, I’ve decided to undergo shoulder surgery,” Ramirez said in a statement. “I’ve been dealing with this since my last fight. Pushing through it isn’t smart for my health or career.”

While the surgery marks an unwanted pause in his momentum, Ramirez was clear: “I’ll be out healing until I’m cleared, but I’m already locked in on therapy. I’ll come back stronger, sharper, and hungrier.”

Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs) has been in red-hot form, claiming the WBA title in March 2024 with a win over Arsen Goulamirian and adding the WBO belt last November with a decision over Chris Billam-Smith in Saudi Arabia.
