Thymen Arensman Claims Stage 14 Victory in the Tour de France
Thymen Arensman of the Netherlands secured victory in the 14th stage of the Tour de France after a superb solo ride during the 183-kilometre mountain trek between Pau and Superbagneres on Saturday.
Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey by finishing second, edging out his main rival Jonas Vingegaard in a two-man sprint finish, 1 minute and 12 seconds behind Arensman of the Ineos Grenadiers.
Pogacar, the defending champion, extended his lead over the Danish rider in the general classification by six seconds, increasing his advantage to 4 minutes and 13 seconds at the end of the demanding Pyrenean stage.
Despite the fierce competition, the day clearly belonged to Arensman, who broke away solo from the main group on the penultimate climb up the Col de Peyresourde (7.1 km at 7.8%) and held his lead to the finish. The stage was not without incident, as Arensman’s team car accidentally knocked down a spectator amid the usual roadside chaos of the Tour.
