Katie Taylor cemented her legacy as one of the greatest in women’s boxing, edging out Amanda Serrano by majority decision on Friday night to retain her undisputed super lightweight title—and complete a 3-0 sweep in their epic rivalry.
Fighting in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden, Taylor prevailed 97-93 and 95-95 on the judges’ scorecards. The bout headlined the first-ever all-women’s boxing card at the iconic venue—a history-making moment for the sport and the fighters who carried it.
“What an amazing fighter,” Taylor said of Serrano after the final bell. “We’re history makers forever.”
At 39, the Olympic gold medalist entered the ring with stoic composure, perhaps hinting at a final chapter in her storied career. Serrano, cheered on by her adopted hometown and flanked by New York Knicks dancers during her entrance, brought the energy—but not quite enough to dethrone the Irish champion.
The early rounds were tense and tactical, with only three punches landing in the first. But the action built steadily. Serrano opened up in the third, throwing with volume, but Taylor’s defense and counter-punching kept her in control through the later rounds.
The fighters embraced at the end, unsure of the result—a fitting gesture after three wars that have pushed the boundaries of women’s boxing.
“I needed a lot of help down the home stretch today,” Taylor admitted. “I just have a ton of respect for Amanda. She’s just—what a warrior.”
Their rivalry, which began with a landmark main event at the Garden in 2022, has now come full circle—this time making history again, with the fight streamed live on Netflix, the platform’s latest bold move into live sports following last year’s NFL debut.
Taylor, who improves to 25-1 (6 KOs), once again proves she’s still the queen of the division. Serrano, now 46-3-1 (30 KOs), walks away with her head held high—and her place in history secured.
