Springbok Sevens ace Zain Davids will captain DHL Western Province on his senior debut in their Carling Currie Cup season opener against the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Cape Town on Saturday. Davids, a standout at age-group level for the union, headlines a squad focused on youth development.
He is one of seven debutants named in the north-south clash, alongside fellow Blitzbok Shilton van Wyk (fullback), Quewin Nortje (wing), Asad Moos (scrumhalf), De Wet Marais (No. 8), Alex Groves (lock), and Cabous Eloff (tighthead prop).
Despite their inexperience at this level, the backline features notable firepower. Van Wyk and Nortje are joined by veteran wing Courtnall Skosan, while Luke Burger and Damian Markus form a solid midfield pairing. Kyle Smith starts at flyhalf in the absence of Manie Libbok, with Jurie Matthee part of the wider squad but not selected for this match.
On the bench, WP have included pacey reinforcements in Ezekiel Ngobeni, Sako Makata, and former Blitzbok Tristan Leyds. The tight five face a significant challenge against a more seasoned Bulls pack featuring Springbok lock Marvin Orie, former WP skipper Nama Xaba, and Junior Pokomela. However, lock Gary Porter, who previously played behind Orie at the Stormers, will be eager to make his mark, supported by experienced front-rowers Scarra Ntubeni and Sti Sithole.
Three replacements — Arno Gustafson, Carlo van Greunen, and Erhard Lambrecht — have been selected from the Western Cape club rugby system, and their performances could prove vital as WP look to build squad depth for the season ahead.
Eight WP players involved in South Africa’s Junior Springbok triumph at the World Rugby U20 Championship are unavailable, having just returned from Italy. Saturday’s fixture will also mark the senior coaching debut of Labeeb Levy, who steps up after assisting Stormers director of rugby John Dobson in recent seasons.
