South African breakthrough sprinter Zakithi Nene delivered yet another impressive performance at the Diamond League meeting held in London, England, on Saturday. Nene secured third place in the men’s 400m, crossing the line in a swift 44.29 seconds.

This marks Nene’s third podium finish of the Diamond League season, as well as the sixth time he has broken the 45-second barrier this year. The race was a thrilling contest, with British athletes Charles Dobson and Olympic silver medalist Matthew Hudson-Smith taking first and second place, clocking 44.14 and 44.27 seconds respectively. The top five runners finished within a narrow margin of just 0.37 seconds, underscoring the competitiveness of the event.

In the men’s 100m sprint, South African record holder Akani Simbine, who has claimed three Diamond League victories this year, finished fifth with a time of 10.11 seconds. The race was won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in a commanding 9.86 seconds, the only athlete in the field to run under 10 seconds.

Looking ahead, the next leg of the Diamond League series will take place in Poland on 16 August, where athletes will once again compete at the highest level.

James Moloi, President of Athletics South Africa, praised Nene’s performance, stating, “Well done Zakithi, coach and support staff. Your perseverance and passion keep bringing you back to the podium.”
